Academic Curriculum

A postgraduate at the end of P.G. degree/ diploma course should acquire the following:

1. Cognitive knowledge: Describe embryology, applied anatomy, physiology, pathology, clinical features, diagnostic procedures and the therapeutics including preventive methods, (medical/surgical) pertainingto musculo-skeletal system.

2. Clinical decision making ability & management expertise: Diagnose conditions from history taking,clinical evaluation and investigations and develop expertise to manage medically as well as surgically the commonly encountered, disorders and disease in different areas as follows:

 (a) Pediatric orthopaedics- The student should be exposed to all aspects of congenital and developmental disorders such as CTEV (club-Foot), developmental dysplasia of hip, congential deficiency of limbs, Perthe’s disease and infections, and also to acquire adequate knowledge about the principles of management of these disorders.

(b) Orthopaedic oncology- The resident is expected to be familiar with the tumours encountered in orthopaedic practice. The recent trends towards limb salvage procedures and the advances in chemotherapy need to be familiar to him.

(c) Management of Trauma- Trauma in this country is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in our demographic statistics. The student is expected to be fully conversant with trauma in its entirety. In any type of posting after qualification the orthopaedic surgeon would be exposed to all varieties of acute trauma. Hence, it is his responsibility to be able to recognize, assess and manage it including the medico legal aspects.

(d) Sports Medicine- A lot of importance is being given to sports medicine especially in view of the susceptibility of the athlete to injury and his failure to tide over them. Sports medicine not only encompasses diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of athletic injuries but also their prevention, training schedules of personnel & their selection.

(e) Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation- The student is expected to be familiar with this in all its aspects. Adequate exposure in the workshop manufacturing orthotics and prosthetics is mandatory, as is the assessment of the orthopedically handicapped.

(f) Orthopedic Neurology- The student should be exposed to all kinds of nerve injuries as regards their recognition & management cerebral palsy and acquired neurologic conditions such as post polio residual paralysis also need to be emphasized in their entirety.

(g) Spine Surgery- The student is expected to be familiar with various kinds of spinal disorders such as scoliosis, kypho-scoliosis, spinal trauma, PIVD, infections (tuberculosis and pyogenic), & tumours as regards their clinical presentations and management.

(h) Basic sciences in Orthopaedics- This deals with some of the fundamentals in orthopaedics such as the structure and function of bone cartilage etc, and their metabolic process. In addition the student learns about implants in orthopaedics and their metallurgy.
(i) Radiology- Acquire knowledge about radiology/imaging and to interpret different radiological procedures and imaging in musculo-skeletal disorders. There should be collaboration with Radiology department for such activities.

(j) Psychologic and social aspect- Some elementary knowledge in clinical Psychology and social, work management is to be acquired for management of patients, especially those terminally ill and disabled-persons and interacting with their relatives.

3. Teaching: Acquire ability to teach an MBBS student in simple and straightforward language about the common orthopaedic ailment/disorders especially about their signs/symptoms for diagnosis with their general principles of therapy.

4. Research: Develop ability to conduct a research enquiry on clinical materials available in Hospital and in the community.

5. Patient doctor relation: Develop ability to communicate with the patient and his/her relatives pertaining to the disease condition, its severity and options available for the treatment/therapy.

6. Preventive Aspect: Acquire knowledge about prevention of some conditions especially in children such as poliomyelitis, congenital deformities, cerebral palsy and common orthopaedic malignancies.

7. Identification of a special areas within the subject: To further develop higher skills within the specialty in a specialized are such as Arthroplasty, Neurology, Arthroscopy oncology, spine surgery, hand surgery and Rheumatology, identify some area of interest during the residency and do fellowship/senior residency programme in one of such areas.

8. Presentation of Seminar/paper: Should develop public speaking ability and should be able to make presentation on disease-conditions/research topics to fellow colleagues in a Seminar/meeting/conference using audiovisual aids.

9. Research writing: Should be capable to write case-reports and research papers for publication in scientific journals.

10. Team work: Team spirit in patient management, working together in OPD, OT, ward and sharing responsibility with colleagues such as doctor, nurses and other staff are essential.


Academic schedule

  1. Every year six MS (Ortho) PGs and 8 D (Ortho) PGs are being trained in our department.

  2. Professors and Asst. Professors take regular theory and clinical classes for the post graduates.

  3. In the OPD, case discussions are being conducted by professors & asst. professors.

  4. Every week review meetings are being conducted and op statistics (Trauma & cold ortho), elective and emergency surgeries are being discussed.

  5. Monthly COTE programmes (Continuing Ortho & Trauma Education) are also conducted.

  6. Monthly tests are conducted for the post graduates.

  7. Dissertation discussions meet is held once in a week with the HOD chairing the meet and Addl. Professors acting as co coordinators.

  8. Post graduate students are posted for 15 days in rehabilitation, paediatric orthopedic departments for special training.

  9. Monthly, rare and interesting cases are presented by our PGs in MOS (Madras orthopedic society) meetings on every first Thursday.

  10. PGs are guided to present papers in state and national conferences.

University Examination details

Final Examination & Examiners

The oral, clinical and Practical Examination: One or 2 centers depending on local university rules. Not more than 6 P.G. students should be subjected to practical exam in a day during the examination. Results of the examination will be declared as ass/failed/pass with distinction (Grade/marks may also be given if necessary as per University Rules). While doing so, both, formative and summative assessment will be taken into consideration.

The Examination for the degree (MS-Orthopaedics) shall consist of

1. Theory exams: papers

2. Practical Exams: - clinical, Oral, instruments/specimen/specimen/X-rays.

1. Theory Examination

There shall be four papers: Each being of three hours duration. Each paper will have 10 short question and 2 essays from the curriculum.

Paper I:  Basic Sciences related to Orthopedics.
Paper II Principles and Practices of orthopaedic including recent advances
Paper III Principles and Practices of Traumatology including recent advances
Paper IV Sub specialties orthopedics

2. Practical Examination

(a) Clinical Patient presentation/discussion:

(i) One long case: The long case will be structured comprising – history taking, clinical examination, investigations, decision making, proposed treatment modalities, ethical justification and personal attributes.

(ii) Three short cases: The short cases will also be structured in which only one particular system may be considered and therapy decision/discussion, made.

(b) Identification of Surgical Pathology, excised specimens & discussion, reading X-rays & CT Scan/MRI, identification of Instruments & discussion, identification of braces & calipers & discussion thereon.

(c)  Dissertation and Log book Evaluation


Continuing Medical Education Programmes

1.Basic Fracture Fixation course was conducted in MMC & GGH on July 19th & 20th, 2008. Venue was 3rd & 5th Seminar Halls in tower block I, MMC. 75 orthopaedic postgraduate delegates from various parts of Tamilnadu attended the course. Hands ontraining in bone modules was given for basic fracture fixation, like dynamic hip screwfixation, pelvic and acetabulum fixation, spine fixation, tension band wiring, externalfixation, plates and screw fixation.Demonstration for interlocking nailing and hemiarthroplasty were conducted. Lectures about various topics like fracture healing, lag screw fixation, tension band wiring ,hemiarthroplasty, external fixation, cannulated screw fixation, pelvic injuries, acetabulum fractures, interlocking nailing were taken by renowned faculties.

2.The CME workshop in Orthopaedics for the DNB students from various institutions in South India, was conducted from 1.8.2008 to 3.8.2008 by the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Madras Medical College, Govt. General Hospital at the Conference Hall in the III Floor of the Tower Block I. The programmewas organised, such that the full range of long and short cases were discussed byeminent faculties on 1.8.2008 and 2.8.2008. Ward rounds and sessions oninstruments, X-rays, MRI, pathology discussion were conducted on the last two days.

3.On 9.8.2008, Dr. Pradeep Kumar, M.B.B.S., MRCP, Consultant Rheumatologist, PerthRoyal Infirmmary, UK gave a lecture about Recent Advances in the Management of Rheumatoid Arthritis. He discussed about the current concepts pathology,investigations and Management of Rheumatoid Arthritis. He was introduced byDr. Jaheer Hussain and felicitated by Dr. Selvaraj, Assistant Professor of OrthopaedicSurgery, Madras Medical College & Government General Hospital, Chennai -

4.Symposium on Knee Arthroscopy was conducted by Department Of Orthopaedic surgery, MMC & GGH on 13.06.2009.. This course was organized to create awareness and train the young aspiring surgeons on the basics of the arthroscopy. The faculty consisted of orthopaedicians and arthroscopic specialists with experience in arthroscopic management of sports injuries. The Symposium was inaugurated by the Dean, of Government General Hospital and Madras Medical College. The lectures were followed by live demonstration of arthroscopic surgical reconstruction of ACL using BTB patellar graft. Hands on work shop in basic knee arthroscopy using 4 sets of mannequin knee models and 4 complete set of arthroscopic equipments and instruments was coducted in  our skills lab

Special Academic avtivities

For the Year - 2005-06

  1. J & J / R. ROAF Fellows visited the department on 6th January 2006, they observed custom mega prosthetic replacement, revision total hip arthroplasty being performed and took part in the scientific session.
  1. Dr. Ilango and Dr. Balakrishnan, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons from UK visited the Department and delivered lectures on revison hip arthroplasty on July 2005.
  1. Interactive programme was organized with Mr. Ian Ritchie, Director, Surgical Training (FRCS, Edinburgh) & Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon on 8th August 2005 at lOam in our Seminar Hall, which was very helpful for post graduates who were planning their future studies and work in UK.
  1. The eighth Dr. V.R. Thayumanaswamy Memorial Oration 2005 was organized on 17th September 2005. Prof (Major) D. Raja, Former Vice Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Dr. M GR Medical University, presided over the oration. The oration on "The Evolution and Progress of Medical Science" was delivered by Prof. T. Dorairaj an, Director of Medical Services (Retd.) and Paediatric Surgeon.
  1. We conducted the National Board of examination D.N.B. Orth.Clinical Examination between 24th and 27th October 2005.
  1. Holistic approach to patient care was emphasized by Dr. Ashok Kumar, Yoga Therapist. Different asanas its therapeutic application was emphasized. He also emphasized the important of relaxation techniques for doctors.
  1. Special programmme on body building by state champions led by was organized to emphasize to the PG student the importance of maintaining good health.
  1. Prof. K. Sriram was kind enough to donate some ofthe Journal collections and CDs for the department. He also donated some of his spine implant to the department as an additional to our armamentarium on 31 st October 2005.
  1. Dr. Patrick Kluger and Dr. Joseph Erli, Aachen University, Germany introduced the K-Fixator for reduction and fixation of Sondylolisthesis on 11 th March 2006.

For the Year - 2006-07

  1. The National Board of Examination D.N.R Ortho. Clinical Examination was conducted between 15th to 18th May 2006.
  1. 2 M.M.C Fracture Fixation Course was organized on 12.8.06 & 13.8.06 under the auspices ofTNOA and MOS (Madras Orthopaedic Society). Organising Secretaries Dr. R. Selvaraj and Dr. Nalli R. Yuvaraj.
  1. The ninenth Prof. ~R. Thayumanaswami Memorial Oration 2006 was organized on 16.09.2006. Prof. K. Annamalai, Former Head, Department of Orthopaedics, Madras Medical College and Gov!. General Hospital, pre~ided over the oration. The oration on "Revision Hip Replacement" was delivered by Prof. S.S.K. Marthandam, Vice Chancellor, Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, Porur, Chennai.
  1. An introduction to Hospital Protocol for Management of Major Disasters - Pilot Project Report on "Disaster Management - Health Care Perspective". was submitted to the Hon 'ble Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Anbumani Ramdoss, by Prof. Mayil Vahanan Natarajan, President, Indian Orthopaedic Association in IOACON 2006 at Delhi on 6.11.07.
  1. The Pilot Project on "Disaster Management" was also submitted to Hon 'ble Local Administration Minister Thiru M.K. Stalin, Thiru K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, Hon. Minister for Health by Prof. Mayil Vahanan Natarajan in a function held at GGH on 13.11.06.

For the Year - 2008-09

  1. The first ever MOU signing under Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) was done between Dept. of Orthopaedic Surgery (GGH) / Govt. of Tamil Nadu and Deputy Johnson &Johnson Ltd., on 9.9.2008. This is the first of its kind in the State Government Hospital.Under this agreement, a sum of 23.75 lac rupees was allotted for the establishment of ORTHO SKILLS LAB in GGH. The event was graced by Hon’ble Minister for Health, ThiruM.R.K. Paneerselvam, Health Secretary Thiru V.K. Subburaj, Prof. Mayil VahananNatarajan, Mr. Subbiah. This event won accolades from personnel of both medical & non-medical fields.
  1. Condolence meeting was organized to Dr. T.K. Shanmugasundaram, Emeritus Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Madras Medical College on 16.8.2008.
  1. The Eleventh Lt. Col. Dr. V.R. Thayumanaswamy Memorial Oration on 25th October 2008. The oration was delivered by Prof. K. Sriram, Former Head,Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. The oration was on “Evolution of the Treatment of Idiopathic Scoliosis”.
  1. Mrs. Janaki Natarajan Gold Medal Examination was conducted on 17.11.2008.The medal was shared by Dr. S. Manoh and Dr. S. Syed Naser, D.Orth. students.

  • Lemelson Recognition and Mentoring Programme (L-Ramp) Innovation Award by the The Lemelson Foundation, USA & Indian Institute of Technology, chennai in recognition of his effort in innovating the Custom Mega Prosthesis (2005).

  • He was elected as President of Indian Orthopaedic Association in Dec. 2005.The lOA is an academic body of 6,000 Orthopaedic Surgeons from all over India. He is the fourth person from Tamil Nadu to be elected for this highest post. The earlier Presidents are Prof. M. Nataraj an, Prof. T.K. Shanmugasundaram and Prof. A. Devadoss.

  • In January 2009, the oldest university of the country, The Madras University conferred onProf. Mayil Vahanan Natarajan the Doctorate of Science (Honoris Causa) for his services to the common man attending the public hospital. He received the award from His Excellency Surjit Singh Barnala, Governor of Tamil Nadu.

  • In February 2009, Prof. Mayil Vahanan Natarajan received the Wockhardt Award for Excellence in the field of Orthopaedics. The awardees are nominated by their peers and their selection is validated by a select panel from Harvard Medical International, Boston, USA. The award was presented to Prof. Mayil Vahanan Natarajan by Habil Khorakiwala in Mumbai, India.

  • Prof. Mayil Vahanan Natarajan has been chosen by the Royal College of Surgeons, England for the conferment of the prestigious FRCS. This fellowship is awarded Ad Eundem thus recognizing his academic excellence and professional intelligence. The degree is to be awarded in a ceremony in July 2009.
