Research and Publication

Scientific activities of the department cover the fields of all aspects of Pharmacognosy, Phytochemistry and Biological screening to enable us to focus attention on biologically active natural products. The core research activity of the department has always been the “exploration of phytomedicines”. The rich flora of Tamil Nadu is an impetus for all the activities carried out in the department.

The current research in the department focuses on screening of medicinal plants with antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, leptospirocidal, antiulcer, anti arthritic, wound healing, analgesic,  antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, activities as well as standardization of herbal medicines

Research programme implemented in the Department

  • Pharmacognostical and phytochemical studies of some selected medicinal plants

  • Screening of medicinal plants for their biologically active lead molecules

  • Standardization protocols for the herbal drugs

  • Screening of herbal formulations for their biological activity
