MMC Post-Centinary Platinum Jubilee Celebrations - 1835-2009

Madras Medical College, the most ancient teaching institution in India had its genesis on 2nd February 1835 and it took 175 years for the institution to transform from where it started on 2nd February 1835 to where it stands today in history

It is celebrating its post-centinary platinum jubilee on February 2nd 2010. This is indeed a major milestone, in that is the only institution in India to have achieved this status

The College decided to celebrate the entire year, from Feb 2009 to Feb 2010 as ‘Year of Post - Centinary Platinum Jubilee Celebrations’, the inaugural function of which was kicked off on Feb 16 th 2009 by Thiru.M.R.K.Pannerselvam, Honorable Minister of Health & Family Welfare Govt.of Tamilnadu, Thiru V.K.Subburaj, I.A.S., Secretary, Health & Family Welfare Govt.of Tamilnadu in the presence of the Director of Medical Education, Dr.S.Vinyagam, M.D., Dr.T.P.Kalanithi, M.D. Former Dean Madras Medical College, Vice-Principal,  Dr.S.Geethalakshmi, Professors & Heads of various departments of the Madras Medical College

Since then various departments of Madras Medical College have been involving themselves in academic activities under the banner of Post Centinary Platinum Jubilee celebrations by conducting workshops, symposiums, seminars and continuing medical education programmes of current interest

As a part of 175th year celebrations it has been planned to -

Renovate the monumental Redfort, where we learnt Anatomy during our first year, which is in a dilapidated state and needs to be restored to its original glory and as a Heritage building. The Anatomy Museum needs revamping. The same is the situation of  our Library which needs modernisation with e-library facility.

The College plans to have a modern state of the art auditorium, and its own guest house to house visitors and examiners to the college for which plans are being drawn.

With the help of MMCians working at home and abroad it is definitely possible

  1. To develop Academic interactions between institutions by way of exchange programmes for faculty and students and by offering guest lectures, interaction through Telemedicne, visiting faculty status, observership etc.
  2. To develop Research activities by co-opting with leading Universities, R&D wings of Pharma Industries.

If only all MMCians take vow to improve our Alma mater there could be no match to MMC.

We plan to have a few other agenda in this celebration like releasing a commemorative postage stamp; honouring our great teachers,

Any other constructive ideas from any of the MMCians, both students and faculty, are welcome in this regard and greatly appreciated.
